Software - Setup With Virtual DJ

What is Virtual DJ?

Virtual DJ is audio mixing software that PCDJ’s use in place of Vinyl or CD based decks. While some knowledge of beatmixing and cueing is beneficial, Virtual DJ allows anyone to start mixing audio without having to purchase expensive equipment. Virtual DJ is available for both Windows and Mac platforms and supports both MP3 and AAC files.

What you will need.

Download Virtual DJ. The free version offers limited broadcasting capabilities, you can download this here.

Once installed, you may wish to set up your music library. This guide is going to focus on connecting to your Wavestreaming SHOUTcast or Cloud DJ server.
If you are unfamiliar with VDJ, you can visit their help page to grab the basics here.

For reference, we are using Virtual DJ 7 Pro.

Wavestreaming SHOUTcast initial setup

If you have one of our SHOUTcast Live packages that does not include a Cloud DJ server, please follow these steps:

  • Launch Virtual DJ and choose the RECORD tab above the Media Browser. Next click Config….
  • A new window will appear. In the Format section choose SHOUTcast (MP3) and the bitrate you would like to broadcast at. (Most Wavestreaming packages offer up-to 128Kbps Streaming. Please consult your Welcome email.)
  • In the Server section, choose Broadcast to a radio server and fill out the following fields ONLY (All information is available in your Welcome Email):

  • Name: Enter your station name. Leaving blank will cause connection issues.

  • Port: The 4 digit port number (E.g. 8000)
  • Password: This is available from Wavepanel > SHOUTcast > Mountpoint Config. (E.g. WaveTest123_dj)

Wavestreaming Cloud DJ initial setup

If you are broadcasting live via a Cloud DJ server, please follow these steps:

Note: This guide assumes you have scheduled a Live DJ event in Wavepanel and the status states ‘Awaiting Connection…’.

  • Launch Virtual DJ and choose the RECORD tab above the Media Browser. Next click Config….
  • A new window will appear. In the Format section choose SHOUTcast (MP3) and the bitrate you would like to broadcast at. This value should match the bitrate set in Cloud DJ settings. (Most Wavestreaming packages offer up-to 128Kbps Streaming. Please consult your Welcome email.)
  • In the Server section, choose Broadcast to a radio server and fill out the following fields ONLY (All information is available in your Cloud DJ Setting pane in Wavepanel):

  • Server: Enter your Cloud DJ server URL (example.wavestreamer.com).
  • Port: The 4 digit port number (E.g. 8000)
  • Password: This must combine your DJ Username and Password. The main username is dj. Please use this format: dj:Password (E.g. dj:WaveTest123_dj).
  • If you have multiple DJ’s set up on your Cloud DJ server, replace ‘dj’ with their username and use their password. (E.g. judith:thumbsup)

The Genre is optional. Please leave Name blank otherwise you may experience connection issues.

Next Steps

In the Config window, there is an Autostart option. This will connect to your server when the first cued track is started in Virtual DJ. If this is disabled, VDJ will connect as soon as you click Start Recording.

When your server is setup, cue your tracks then click Start Recording.
If you receive an error, please check the following:

  • The password is correct
  • If broadcasting to Cloud DJ, your Scheduled event is Awaiting Connection…
  • If Broadcasting direct to your SHOUTcast server, it is turned on and has no other source connected.

If Autostart is enabled, Virtual DJ will begin streaming to your SHOUTcast/Cloud DJ server as soon as you hit Play.

You can check the status in Wavepanel on your SHOUTcast dashboard / Cloud DJ Dashboard.
